The ACRONYM X NIKELAB LUNAR FORCE 1 COLLECTION brings together two of our favourite brands in one fell swoop. Errolson Hugh, founder of the much-respected Acronym design agency (along with Michaela Sachenbacher) has carved out his niche as the king of technical apparel. The clever use of materials and genuine consideration for creating superior clothing has made Acronym a force to be reckoned with – and that’s why brands such as Burton, United Arrows, Arc’Teryx and Stone Island have all joined the waiting list to work with them.

Nike astutely asked Errolson and Acronym to help relaunch their ACG range, resulting in a strong set of footwear and apparel that has introduced a new generation to pleasures of All Conditions Gear. With this in mind, we wondered when there would be a direct Nike x Acronym collaboration – and we’re pleased to show you the first results of this joint venture right now.

Zips on shoes have always been a matter of taste: sometimes it works (Nike x Fragment Air Magma), sometimes it doesn’t (Nike Air Max 95 Z). If you’re going to use zipper fastenings, then confidence is the key and on this Lunar Force 1, the YKK zip dominates the upper section of the shoe. Instead of being forced into the design as an alternative fastening, it allows you to open the shoe up, adding a new viewpoint altogether. What could have looked like a b-grade basketball shoe in the hands of amateurs, looks like a genius creation from the sketchbooks of HR Giger. The tongue details, bi-coloured midsole and patent heel panel emphasize the bold look of this military-esque AF1. Some may be confused by the almost half-finished aesthetic on the upper section, but this confident look really works as an example of clever engineering rather than a tacked-on addition. The Black/White/Black and the White/Bright Crimson/White editions started showing up online at the start of the year, but there’s also a previously-unseen Black/Turbo Green/Court Purple/White colourway waiting in the wings as well. With such a strong offering, we’re going to find it hard to choose just one pair when they drop later this week…
