adidas P.O.D S3.1 Maker Lab: Event Recap

2018-06-15T17:42:53

In the lead up to the release of adidas’ new silhouette, the ADIDAS P.O.D S3.1, we were invited to create our very own spin on the archive-inspired model.

The day kicked off at the adidas Originals concept store on Hanbury Street, where we were introduced to the Creative Director of Originals, Nic Galway, who broke down the design process behind the forthcoming shoe alongside his colleagues Remy Eyraud (Senior Designer) and Morgan Boeri (Head of Originals product).

After the meet and greet concluded, we were taken to the Maker Lab and presented with a box full of the shoe’s components, as well as an adidas archive glove, before heading to designated tables to design our own P.O.D alongside an experienced shoemaker. Everyone had two hours to create their own spin on the model, which started by gluing together a sole unit (outsole, forefoot, Torsion unit, and heel) before moving onto the upper, which included various meshes and knitted uppers for the base layers; suede, leather and synthetic panelling for the mudguards and lace stays; and various material options for the finer details. There were also several customisation booths on offer, including a spray paint booth, laser engraving, and embroidery. Once the upper was finalised, it was taken to the Strobel Station, where the upper was sewn onto a fabric bottom to create a sock-fit like construction, which is a standard process amongst athletic companies.

The final footwear creation was then photographed in studio-style for the professional finish, before attendees were treated to food, drinks, and live music (including an appearance from Pharrell) to round off a very productive day indulging in the ultimate customisable shoe workshop…
