ASICS Tiger Gel Lyte V Black and Purple – A First Look

The ASICS TIGER GEL LYTE V BLACK AND PURPLE sees the model sport a colourway that works perfectly for Halloween (or Hallowe’en, for those who wish to be grammatically correct!).

Black and purple have had a connection to Halloween for years (just check out the witch outfits in you local costume shop), but when it comes to those colours and trainers there is an even darker connection. Back in 1997, a group of Heaven’s Gate members were discovered after committing mass suicide. Each of the 39 members were found dressed head to toe in black, with brand new pairs of Nike Decades on their feet, bought just hours earlier, and a purple cloth draped over them. The Nike Decade was immediately discontinued and a colourway of Nike SB Dunks that were inspired by the events was scrapped before it made production due to the controversy. The chances are that these aren’t inspired by that event, but it’s difficult not to make some kind of association. Black dominates the mesh and suede upper, with hits of purple on the formstripes, lining and branding adding some pop. The black midsole continues the stealthy look, with purple speckling and matching heel detail on the outsole tying in nicely with the upper. Whether these are inspired by the aforementioned gruesome events or not, there’s no denying that they look great.
