Variety is the spice of life – and the new BRAIN DEAD x CONVERSE CHUCK TAYLOR ALL STAR 70 HI is here to offer exactly that.

With so many colours and designs in the archives, picking a favourite Chuck Taylor to wear has always been a difficult task. Utilising the shoe as a literal blank canvas, Converse first applied a graphic pattern — a camouflage print — to the Chuck Taylor All Star way back in 1983, kickstarting an ever-continuing series of designs, such as glow-in-the-dark animal prints (1988) and American flag prints (1991). Since then, we’ve seen multiple brands, artists and others apply their own treatments to the canvas uppers.

For this special collaboration, Brain Dead put their own stamp on the Chuck Taylor All Star 70, offering a unique mash-up of archival Converse graphic prints. Led by founders Kyle Ng and Ed Davis, Brain Dead’s unique approach in retooling the iconic Chuck 70 results in a clever capsule collection comprised of both footwear and apparel. For those of us who can’t decide between camouflage, patriotic stars and stripes, bold animal prints, or polka dots, this release offers the full works in one place. Each section of both the left and right shoe features an alternate print from the shoe’s history, enhanced by the Brain Dead logo and complimentary typography featured along the bumper of both shoes. “People always expect us to do graphic work,” says Ng. “We wanted to take a more conceptual approach with Converse. We were inspired by pattern deconstruction — we were interested in creating chaos with something that already existed.”
