Getting medieval with the Hanon x Reebok Club C Claymore

With an eye on spring and tennis season, the HANON X REEBOK CLUB C CLAYMORE is a modern re-imagination of the mid-80s performance tennis shoe. Although… while it was originally designed for on-court action, this new interpretation of the Club C pays homage to a different kind of forehand stroke.

If you were listening closely in history class – or, like your faithful writer, you spent countless days playing The Elder Scrolls instead of paying attention to your girlfriend – you will know that the ‘Claymore’ is a kind of heavy, bone splitting sword, popular during Scotland’s clan wars, and one that needed to be wielded with both hands. The ‘Great Sword’ as it translates from Scots’ Gaelic, serves as Hanon’s inspiration, as the lads from the Aberdeen-based boutique have spruced up the silhouette with Celtic motifs from the period. For instance, it features a rich pig suede upper that is split with a ballistic mesh that’s evocative of chain mail armour. And to depict the Great Sword itself, the colourway is a silver grey that is combined with a blue steel rubber outsole. A shield and sword logo lockup delivers the dual Hanon/Reebok branding, while an ornate Celtic knot pattern – similar to what you’d see straddling a traditional Claymore’s handle – is included across the collar lining, tongue backer and silk screened onto a laminate leather footbed. Additional features include a lush brown satin lining, an embossed tongue patch with bar tack stitching, gold top eyelet, criss-cross micro perforations over the vamp and gold swords embossed on each heel tab.
