Going For Gold: The Karhu x Paavo Nurmi Games Synchron Classic

The KARHU x PAAVO NURMI GAMES SYNCHRON CLASSIC pays respect to one of Finland’s most decorated Olympians.

One of the most decorated track and field athletes in Olympic history, Paavo Johannes Nurmi is  one of two track and field athletes to win nine gold medals. A middle and long distance runner, the Finnish athlete set 22 world records and his dominating streak over his sport gained him the nickname, ‘Flying Finn’. Back in the days of black racing spikes, Nurmi bucked the trend and began wearing all white Kangaroo leather Karhu shoes on the track, cementing a long relationship with the homegrown brand.

So, to celebrate Karhu’s 100th anniversary year, the Finnish brand have collaborated with the Paavo Nurmi Games (PNG) to honour the groundbreaking athlete’s innovative spirit. A Finnish track and field event that attracts top international talent to the Flying Finn’s hometown of Turku, this year is also a special one for PNG, as they celebrate 60 years in action, making a collaboration with Nurmi’s top choice in footwear brands a perfect toast to both brand’s successes.

With a lot to celebrate, the materials utilised on Karhu’s popular Synchron Classic silhouette don’t fall short of premium, mixing together white soft grain leather with performance-ready air mesh and a rubberized heel. The tongue receives a special injected rubber treatment that features dual branding to mark the collaboration between Karhu and the Paavo Nurmi project, whilst the footbed becomes a commemoration of Nurmi’s accomplishments at the Olympics and the medals he won. Finishing things off nicely, the special 100th-anniversary Karhu x Paavo Nurmi box features the athlete’s signature with bespoke wrapping paper to honour the record holder. Finally, a choice of two laces come with the Synchron Classic, offering a balanced look that pays homage to the athlete’s awe-inspiring achievements.

The Karhu x Paavo Nurmi Synchron Classic is currently available at the newly opened Karhu concept store in Helsinki, Finland with a global release set to follow this weekend.
