Whilst the Le Coq Sportif Flash is a fairly simple mesh running shoe, it can’t be accused of being the shy and retiring type, having been treated to a some pretty striking versions over the last few months. Despite this, the French brand have turned up the volume even further on their latest incarnation, the LE COQ SPORTIF FLASH FRESH.

As the slimline, lightweight performance runner in Le Coq’s current retro lineup, the Flash is a pretty simple proposition on paper – an upper of mainly nylon mesh, synthetic suede mudguards, and a dual-density foam midsole.  All suitably retro, yet lacking a lot of the tech gimmicks that most shoes from 1990 were packing – but that’s not to say it’s boring.  While the Eclat takes care of the classy, stylish end of the Le Coq range and the R1000 goes for the full on archive tech runner, the Flash seems to have been let off the leash to run riot.  The Sneaker Freaker ‘Summer Bay’ versions were a suitably bright blue tribute to everyone’s second favourite Aussie daytime soap, while the Crooked Tongues version upped a bold Eurotunnel theme, which was appropriate given the amount of French exchange students we would see rocking the Coq back in the day.

For this pack Le Coq have injected even more gallic flair, using a mix of contrasting colours and a jarring black on yellow ‘rain camo’ style section to up the ante.  The pink pair are absolutely wild, gathering more than a few WTF-style glances during our photoshoot, and while the black pair are more subtle, it’s the difference between a punch in the throat and a kick in the groin – both are pretty hard to ignore!

On foot it has to be said that despite these being a fairly narrow build the fit and comfort is excellent, and that true-to-1990 shape is superb – tapering nicely without any toebox bulk.  Whilst we were a little sceptical at first, the black pair have really grown on us, especially on foot, and whilst the pinks are still a bit ‘outre’ for us, we can see them working really well in smaller sizes for the ladies.

Guaranteed to snap necks and have people ask questions, the LE COQ SPORTIF FLASH FRESH is set to drop imminently and we will keep you updated with all the info come the time.
