Available Now: A Closer Look at the Nike React Element 87

We take a closer look at the design process of Nike’s new model – the NIKE REACT ELEMENT 87.

You could say that Nike’s newest silhouette is a little bit different. First seen on a Parisian fashion show runway, the React Element 87’s roots are realistically a lot more down to earth, being born from a simple desire to make walking and running a more comfortable task. With this in mind, Nike started work quite simply with a “slab and a drill,” and pressure map tested individuals who spent a lot of time on their feet to pinpoint where the foot becomes fatigued from commuting and everyday tasks. Nike Sportswear Innovation Designer, Darryl Matthews, used the pressure maps wave-like arcs acquired from the data to create a pattern that could be applied to the outsole with a deboss to facilitate movement, progressing the original “back-to-basics” method to inform his two-day sketch of the eventual design.

When it came to aesthetic, Matthews looked back over Nike’s illustrious history of cutting-edge running silhouettes, including the Nike Internationalist, which first made its debut back in 1981. Here he borrowed inspiration from the tongue, toe, and heel clip, which were then merged with translucent textile uppers and distinct asymmetrical tongue utilised on last year’s Zoom Fly SP, further marrying the brand’s strong running roots with its technologically primed sensibilities. Suede accents, rubber outsole pods, and the Nike React logo then swoop in to give the shoe a unique edge, with the avant-garde TPE yarn textile upper creating a see-through finish, which can change the shoe’s dynamic depending on the colour of socks worn underneath. Sharing the same foam, facets of the Nike Epic React are also obviously apparent, but the React Element 87 disregards its predecessors tight and stiff fit for something a little looser and wider, offering a softer bounce underfoot. Making its debut this week in a choice of Anthracite, Black and White or Sail, Light Bone, White and Rush Orange – we’re pretty sure there will be much more to come from this new addition to the Nike family…
