Thomas Campbell Brings His Artistic Talents to the Canvas of the Nike SB Zoom Dunk High Premium

The NIKE SB ZOOM DUNK HIGH PREMIUM x THOMAS CAMPBELL brings the talents of the multimedia artist to the canvas of the Dunk, in a familiar ‘What The’ format of asymmetric panels.

Long before the Dunk High became one of the most omnipresent shoes on the street, it was a basketball icon. Over time, and through exploratory sessions, both the Dunk and the Jordan 1 became serious contenders in the skate scene: with reliable ankle support, comfortable midsoles and durable uppers, it was hardly a surprise. Nike picked up on this and the Dunk became the lead shoe in the early SB days, finding legions of fans across the board (if you’ll pardon the pun).

For this special edition of the SB Dunk High, Nike have enlisted the artistic skills of California’s Thomas Campbell. As a filmmaker, surfer, skater, photographer and all-encompassing artist, Campbell’s presence has been felt ever since the initial uprising of the skate/surf/street art scene of the 1990s. Curators such as Aaron Rose drew together selected artists – including luminaries such as Ed Templeton, ESPO, Geoff McFetridge, Barry McGee, Marharet Kilgallen, Shepard Fairey and Mike Mills to name a few – and put on a series of shows at places such as the Alleged Gallery in New York. Many of these names went on to forge successful careers as artists – and Campbell is no exception. His art, which he prefers to keep separate from his surfing life, evokes visions of quilting, sketching and scrapbook pages and lends itself well to footwear. Whilst some have bandied these as a new instalment of the infamous ‘What The’ series, the artwork comes from Campbell rather than previous editions and colourways of the Dunk High. Watch out for an accompanying Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski as well, which features similar patchwork styling to its bigger brother.
