Continuing our run of NIKEiD features, this time we’re taking a good look at something that we think shows off the best aspects of the NIKEiD platform. Some of the models give you a few panels to work your magic on, but the NIKE AIR MAX 1 PREMIUM iD is next level. The number of options on this shoe are incredible: you can really mix things up across a full range of upper panels, sole sections and other details. Definitely one of the most flexible and fun options on the NIKEiD site right now.
With all these options at our fingertips, putting this feature together took a little longer than the previous installments (which you can find here and here) but was probably the most fun. A great starting point is to pick one of the inspiration shoes that Nike have already put together – and then dip into the options…
First up, we thought we’d play with some of the new bits and pieces. It’s all very well going traditional and keeping things classic – and, as you’ll see further on, those options are very much available – but we wanted to explore the new technology a little bit to kick off. This one is codenamed ‘Smoke and Daggers’, with some light grey camo Jacquard, a good dollop of grimy smoke-coloured black camo – and then the all-important red colour pops on the swoosh and the airbag. A black Lunar midsole with a white outsole keeps it clean underfoot and the subtle green speckles add a little bit of ‘What the heck?’ to the whole package.
Next up, let’s follow the formula of one of our favourites from the past: the Urawa Air Max 1. With the current iD options, you can get pretty damn close to the original shoe, with just a few extra tweaks to avoid a total bite. Suede and mesh on the uppers keep close to the original shoe, but we’ve gone for red speckles on the white midsole and a black airbag. Yellow laces are the essential icing on the cake. Ura… what?
It’s currently 30 degrees here, so we’ve opted for something a little icier to cool us down. Polarised blue Zig Woven sections meet Military Blue synthetic leather and a cool fade on the Lunarlon midsole. “Hang on… is that a Polarised Blue lining?”, we hear you shout. Yes. Yes it is! A fictional Mr. Freeze x Nike co-lab, if you will.
Time to move away from the usual pattern of panel-beating and mix things up a bit more. Taking the much-loved Internationalist blue and yellow for the uppers and adding a little University Red on the airbag, the eyelet and the outsole is a perfect combination. And why not throw a blue-to-white fade on the Lunarlon midsole while we’re at it?
Before we know it, it’ll be autumn again, so let’s create a couple of colourways to prepare for the shorter days. First up, there’s what we’re calling the Purple Dragon: a mix of black camo Jacquard, purple suede and a dope black speckled Lunarlon midsole, with a bright Tour Yellow swoosh. This started off life as a Livestrong-inspired shoe, but we threw the other colours on there to keep things fresh. These should keep looking good even when the weather starts to turn.
This feature could go on endlessly – the options are just that good on this one. Instead, we’ll throw out one more of our recent creations to round this set off. All-red has been a popular choice for many, so we started there and then added a few deviations to the mix: a yellow swoosh, black and red speckled midsole and a burning orange outsole to turn a few heads. Something to keep the heat up when the leaves start to turn brown in a few months…
As we’ve said, and hopefully demonstrated, the options and possibilities on the NIKE AIR MAX 1 PREMIUM iD really are amazing: it’d be easy to make a whole year’s worth of shoes in one session on here. It’s a good shape, and even with the new material options and modern technology, it still has the essential essence of one of our favourite shoes of all-time.
