The NikeLab Dunk Hi x COMME des GARÇONS is a Clear Winner

The NIKELAB DUNK HI x COMME DES GARÇONS uses the fairytale theme of invisible clothing to great effect on this reinterpretation of the Nike Dunk High.

As a lighthearted refrence to Hans Christian Andersen’s account of an emperor’s vain misfortune — that he was tricked into buying and wearing ‘invisible clothing’, thus exposing himself — the Spring ‘17 COMME des GARÇONS Homme Plus show last June in Paris debuted this intriguing design. Rei Kawakubo’s collection interprets the story’s underlying contradiction of invisibility as transparency, also making a reference to today’s culture of information overload and over-sharing. The clear-soled NikeLab Air VaporMax x COMME des GARÇONS debuted in similar fashion at the Spring ’17 show last October.

The Dunk retains its leather overlay, in black, over a transparent PVC vamp, quarter, tongue and collar, revealing foam underneath the tongue and collar. You’d best pick nice socks to wear, as they’re on full display here! Holes on the medial quarter and vamp provide essential ventilation. Anyone who recalls the Espo Air Force II, the Fantastic Four pack from 2006 or even the clear panels on the CLOT ‘Kiss of Death’ Air Max 1 will remember just how freaky transparency can look on foot!

The NIKELAB DUNK HI x COMME DES GARÇONS releases on WEDNESDAY 8 FEBRUARY at COMME des GARÇONS New York, in conjunction with New York Fashion Week. Rumours of a slightly wider release at the CDG flagship store and Dover Street Market in NYC remain unconfirmed. You can shop the current Dunk High collection at NIKE via the banner below.
