When it comes to technological advancement in footwear design and performance, it would be impossible to omit the PUMA RS series from the history books. PUMA’s RS range – which stands for Running System, in case you were wondering – marks an important period in running shoe advancements.

With innovation being very much a key initiative in the development of the RS series, the original PUMA RS model catered to the demand for reliable stability that athletes were looking for in the 1980s, whilst also providing a fashionable look and superior levels of comfort – both of which remain key for the modern consumer as well. Instead of simply reissuing the original design, PUMA redeveloped the RS and launched it as the PUMA RS-0: a reboot (or version 2.0) of the Running System, stripping it down and building it back up with a revised aesthetic and modern materials that ensured its relevance for the current day

The PUMA RS-100, released back in 1986, was undoubtedly one of the most advanced shoes of the era. The combination of textile and leather uppers gave the shoe a layered, progressive appearance, giving hints to the technology that lay within. Tech is all well and good, but to ensure that the shoe would find success on the streets as well, the comfortable padded collar and trusted RS cushioning gave the shoe a level of casual appeal too.

Following this, the subsequent release of the PUMA RS-350 in 1987 took the torch from its predecessors and built on the foundations and success of the RS range. The updated edition of the RS-350 appeared in 2018, demonstrating that vintage ’80s running styles can be just as appealing decades later. It wasn’t all about the aesthetics though: reliable support in the midsole and a heel counter that ensured stability proved that vintage tech could still cut the mustard years later if executed correctly.

Bringing things right up to date, the recent addition of the PUMA RS-X³ LEVEL UP to the line-up ensures that the series will continue its legacy in appropriate fashion. The technical aspects of the shoe have been matched with a new, contemporary design, featuring leather, suede, mesh and synthetic panels throughout. All of the progressive and innovative qualities first seen in the original RS model are very much present in this newest member of the collection. The RS collection proves that PUMA’s design was light years ahead of the competition. You can explore the RS range for yourself: check out the latest releases from PUMA via the banner below.
