Pack it Up, Pack it in with the Nike x Tom Sachs Poncho

The NIKE x TOM SACHS PONCHO continues Tom Sachs’ Mars Yard footwear concept, which was first debuted as part of his SPACE PROGRAM 2.0: Mars exhibition back in May 2012.

The story of the Nike x Tom Sachs Poncho began in 2015 as a design challenge to develop and explore transforming apparel. Jarrett Reynolds, Nike’s senior design director for apparel special projects, looked at creating a slimline pack complete with a quick-deploy poncho that could pulled swiftly from its carry and could be easily repacked after use.

The resulting design, which is the highlight of the NIKECRAFT Transitions collection (inclusive of the Mars Yard Overshoe and the down short), incorporates materials such as Dyneema®️ (the same super-strong fibre used on the Mars Yard Overshoe) and ceramic beads created by Sachs’ studio. A Fidlock buckle ensures ease of use for the waist strap, and the poncho itself is constructed from a three-layer waterproof and breathable fabric that allows for maximum coverage but takes up minimal space. Bold printing on the back of the garment proudly announces the location of manufacture: Vietnam.
